"Des apna ho gaya hai, lekin log paraye go gaye hai". Is this statement justified? Can we improve?

The question is in Hindi because i want the discussion to remain among Indians. Most of us know where this quote is from! Dont you think this is true? Today to a foreign Eye, India is growing at 9 % GDP! We all know that the positive affects are completely invisible! I am an Indian from Mumbai, brought up in malabar hill and have pursued education in UK and now I am in USA ( so i have seen the higher and lower strata of Indian society). Everytime i go back home, i realise how disfunctional our country is! And what makes a country - its people. We complain about governments, and while doing so we chuck junk on the road! We complain about corruption, and yet some of us bribe officials in Visa and other departments to get the job done quicker! We complain that government is not doing anything about the poor! and yet again, we insult a ping beggar calling him "chal hut chuthye". The best non profit organization(redcross) is infact american. Are we just a bunch of hypocrites?
