Hair Disaster; Please Help!

From the very beginning of May until August 5th, I was a lifeguard in Wildwood, NJ. I was a life guard at the ocean and at a local pool. Well, from constantly being out in the sun and from being in the dangerous waters, my hair color lightened drastically and I hated it. My hair went from a medium, dark shade of brown to a very dirty looking brown. So, last night, I had my friend dye it. Now that it was dyed, it looks black and I HATE IT even more! I tried to use Head and Shoulder Shampoo to get the dye out or to even make my hair look like its natural color, but it didn't work at all! Does anyone know any other home remedies that would work in my situation? And please, only serious answers and only things that you know work! Thank you! Also, I cannot afford to go to a professional.
