Is race being used as a crutch or an obstacle in American politics today?

Just wondering if racism is okay as long as it fits your agenda, or is it something that was meant to be overcome with the civil rights movement decades ago. Please give me your opinions and not make it a left vs. right hissy fit like all other questions on YA politics
